The BMW B47 is the 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel that succeeded the widespread N47 in 2014. It comes in 18d, 20d and 25d versions, and sits in a long list of BMW models, from the 1 Series and 3 Series to the X1, X3 and 5 Series.
What makes the B47 a solid platform?
The B47 was developed to fix what troubled its predecessor, while delivering modern efficiency and lower emissions. The construction is more robust, thermal management is improved, and the engine management is more refined. For a tuning project, that means a more predictable engine with healthy potential.

Stage 1 potential
Stage 1 on the B47 is pure software optimisation with no hardware changes. This is where the compact diesel shows what it can do. Typical figures for the 20d, by far the most common variant we see:

The big winner here is torque. A 20d going from 400 to nearly 490 Nm feels radically different — especially out of corners, uphill and when overtaking. It is precisely the torque gain that makes B47 tuning so rewarding.
The figures apply to healthy engines with a working DPF and injectors. The actual gain depends on engine condition, mileage and fuel quality. We always confirm the potential for the specific engine before we start.
Timing chain: forbedringen over N47
The best-known weakness of the N47 was the timing chain — the chain driving the camshaft. At high mileages it could stretch or break, with costly engine damage as the result. It became a warning sign for a whole generation of diesel owners.
With the B47, BMW addressed exactly this. The chain guides were redesigned, the guide and tensioner improved, and the whole system given larger dimensions. The result is an engine where the timing chain is rarely what limits service life — a significant difference for anyone building long-term projects.
It is also one of the reasons the B47 is considered a safer starting point than the older N57 for owners wanting a modern, low-maintenance diesel.
DPF, EGR and AdBlue
The B47 is a modern diesel, and that means an emissions system with several components that must work for the engine to perform optimally:
- DPF (particulate filter). A blocked or worn DPF increases exhaust restriction and can limit both performance and reliability. Its condition is always checked before tuning.
- EGR (recirculation valve). A failing EGR causes soot build-up and poorer combustion. It should work correctly or be handled deliberately.
- AdBlue/SCR. The B47 uses AdBlue to reduce NOx emissions. The system must be intact so the engine management does not go into limp mode.
- Injectors and turbo. Worn components give poorer results and a lower safety margin.
For vehicles where emissions requirements no longer apply, other possibilities open up — but then it is done holistically and deliberately, never at random. Our approach is always to consider the whole picture before setting a level.

The B47 is built for a long life, and tuned within sensible limits it keeps that quality. Most problems we see are caused by increased load on an engine with already worn emissions components, not the software itself. That is why we always start with condition, then choose a level the engine can handle over time.
