Stage 1 and Stage 2 are the two most common levels of tuning, and there is plenty of confusion about what actually separates them. This article gives you the straight answer, without the sales talk.

When you start looking at tuning, you will quickly notice that almost every offer is described as either «Stage 1» or «Stage 2». Prices vary, power claims vary, and it is not always easy to know what you are actually getting. Let us clear it up.

Kjernen i forskjellen

The decisive distinction is simple:

That is it. «Stage» is not a standardised measure of power. It is an indication of how much the hardware needs to change for the map to run safely.

What is Stage 1?

Stage 1 unlocks power already latent in the engine by changing the software. As we cover thoroughly in the Stage 1 article, everything stays within the factory's margins.

You keep the original exhaust, intercooler and turbo. That makes Stage 1:

What is Stage 2?

Stage 2 goes further. To get even more power from the engine, you need to increase airflow and manage extra heat. That typically means some of the following:

With this hardware in place, the software can be written more aggressively, delivering extra power beyond what Stage 1 can achieve.

Note that the exact gain depends heavily on the engine. A strong turbo engine can gain well over twice as much on Stage 2 as on Stage 1, while a weaker engine has less to give. See our power guide for concrete figures.

Many start with Stage 1, live with it for a while, and upgrade to Stage 2 when they feel like more. This is often the wisest route. You experience the difference step by step, and you never build more than you actually need.
