The OM654 is Mercedes' latest-generation 2.0-litre diesel. It is lighter, cleaner and more advanced than its predecessor, and although the technology demands more of whoever optimises it, it offers genuine, significant potential.
What is the OM654?
The OM654 is a four-cylinder 2.0-litre common-rail diesel from Mercedes-Benz, introduced as the successor to the well-known OM651. It is built for a new generation of emissions, consumption and comfort requirements, and is found in the C-Class (both W205 and W206), E-Class, GLC and a range of vans such as the Sprinter.
Like other modern diesels, the OM654 is a holistic machine: engine, turbo, exhaust treatment and, on newer versions, a mild-hybrid system (ISG) are designed to work together. That means optimisation cannot happen in isolation; it must understand the engine as an integrated system. Aluminium block, ISG and common-rail
Three technical features set the OM654 apart from older Mercedes diesels:
- Aluminium block. It is lighter than its predecessor's cast-iron block, contributing to lower consumption and better weight balance. The block is nonetheless dimensioned with sufficient margin for its power class.
- ISG mild-hybrid. On newer versions, an integrated starter-generator (ISG) is mounted between engine and gearbox. It provides torque assistance at low rpm and handles start/stop seamlessly.
- High common-rail pressure. The injection system operates at high pressure for fine atomisation and precise fuel delivery — important for both power and emissions.
Together these features make the OM654 a technologically tighter engine than its predecessor. That places demands, but also allows a well-considered calibration to deliver marked improvements in response and torque.

The engine sitting in everything from a compact C-Class to a heavy Sprinter illustrates its flexibility. The power levels span from around 160 hp in the mildest variants to 220+ hp in the top-configured passenger cars.

Advanced, but with great potential
It is easy to assume such an advanced engine has nothing to gain. The reality is the opposite: the OM654 leaves the factory with substantial torque reserves. Much of the reason is that the engine shares its basis with stronger variants and is calibrated conservatively for emissions, durability and brand strategy.
A well-executed optimisation shows especially in the mid range, where the ISG and turbo are already building torque. Many find the car feels more awake and responsive to the throttle, without peak power necessarily being the most important thing. ISG, AdBlue and common-rail pressure
The advanced technology means certain systems must be understood before work starts:
- ISG integration. The mild-hybrid system is wired into the engine management and provides torque assistance. It cannot be optimised in isolation, but must be treated as part of the whole.
- AdBlue / SCR. Like other modern diesels, the OM654 uses AdBlue for NOx reduction. The system is integrated with the calibration and must be kept healthy.
- Common-rail pressure. High injection pressure means the injectors and pump must be in good condition to exploit increased fuelling. Worn components give a poorer, less stable result.
The OM654 is one of the technologically tightest diesels we encounter. That means a health check — exhaust treatment, ISG condition and injectors — is always part of the assessment before we determine the potential of a specific engine. Especially under hard, sustained load, this is decisive for stability.

A typical 194 hp variant can reach around 230–240 hp and 480 Nm, but the biggest gains often lie in response and the mid range rather than peak power alone.
