For a long time the OM651 was Mercedes' most-used four-cylinder diesel. It is technically familiar, widespread and well-proven, and for a healthy engine it offers solid potential. But it also has a history on early model years that makes a prior health check especially important.
What is the OM651?
The OM651 is a four-cylinder 2.2-litre (quoted as 2.1L in some markets) common-rail diesel from Mercedes-Benz. It was the company's dominant four-cylinder diesel through most of the 2010s, eventually replaced by the newer OM654.

Familiar technology — a proven platform
The OM651 has a cast-iron block, common-rail injection and a variable-geometry turbo (VGT) on most variants. It is technically simpler than its OM654 successor, and lacks ISG mild-hybrid on most versions. That makes it a more «classic» diesel to understand and work with.
The technology being familiar means there is broad, shared experience of how the engine responds to optimisation. It comes in several power levels, typically 136, 170 and 204 hp, where the differences lie largely in calibration, turbo and intercooling — not the block itself.

How much can you gain?

Known weaknesses: balancer shaft and gear
Here is the honest part. Early model years of the OM651 have a known history tied to the balancer shaft and its gear. The problem mainly arose on units produced in certain periods, where the balancer-shaft gear could wear out and, in the worst case, lead to engine damage.
For an owner considering tuning, this means one thing: do a health check before optimising. Especially on older, high-mileage model years, we always look at the balancer shaft and gear before assessing the potential. A worn balancer shaft and increased torque are not a good combination.
This is not an argument against tuning — it is an argument for doing it right, on an engine that has been checked and is healthy.

Why the OM651 is still relevant
Despite the history, the OM651 is one of the most predictable Mercedes diesels to optimise. The reason is simple: the technology is mature, it is widespread, and the mechanical block is strong once the known weaknesses have been checked out.
For many projects, especially older vehicles built for hard use, the OM651 is a cheaper and more accessible starting point than the newer OM654.
